DIY Varnishing Guide — Only 4 Steps
Varnishing the furniture yourself gives you full control over the treatment process — you know exactly which varnish was used, how many layers were applied, and the conditions under which the work was done. The process is transparent, the decision is informed, and the result is a safe product finished by your own hands.
The DIY approach also offers more freedom and involvement. You can use the furniture in its natural state or decide yourself when to finish it. This is often a more affordable choice and can turn into a fun family activity.
In this article, you will learn:
- What is included in the Varnishing Box;
- How to varnish furniture at home;
- How to turn this process into a fun family experience.
What Do We Need for Varnishing?
To varnish at home, you will need:
- Protective floor paper;
- Water-based, EN 71-3 compliant varnish;
- Gloves;
- Face mask;
- Sandpaper;
- Special tack cloth (dust removal cloth).
Please note: For two coats on 1–2 medium-sized products, 250 ml of varnish is usually sufficient.
It is mandatory that the varnish packaging carries the EN 71-3 compliance mark — this means the product is safe for contact with children.

Involving Children
📌 Children aged 1–3 can participate in:
- The product assembly process;
- Lightly sanding the surface.
📌 From age 3, they can participate in the varnishing process under adult supervision.
⚠️ Note: The use of a face mask and full adult supervision is mandatory.
How to Prepare the Workspace?
Before varnishing:
- Lay the protective paper on a soft working surface;
- It is recommended to varnish the product after assembly to ensure the varnish is distributed evenly and to avoid assembly difficulties;
- Put on your gloves and face mask;
- Shake the varnish can for 2–3 minutes before use.
The varnish must be:
- Water-based;
- EN 71-3 compliant;
- Specifically intended for toys and children’s products.
Avoid contact with eyes and mouth.
The Varnishing Process — 4 Simple Steps
1️⃣ The First Coat:
Apply the varnish evenly and thinly, following the direction of the wood grain.
2️⃣ Sanding:
Once dry, lightly sand the surface.
3️⃣ Dust Removal:
Wipe with the special tack cloth so the surface is completely clean.
4️⃣ The Second Coat:
Apply the second layer using the same principle — along the grain.
⏱️ Drying Time: The first coat dries in about 1 hour. For the best results, we recommend waiting 2–3 hours or overnight before applying the second coat.
Finishing and Safety
- Sand gently.
- Wipe the surface with the special cloth.
- After finishing the work, store all tools out of reach of children.
- Avoid intensive use of the furniture until it is completely dry.
More Than Just Varnishing
DIY varnishing isn’t just a technical process. It is:
- Quality control;
- A responsible choice;
- Quality time spent creating with your children.
A correctly executed process ensures a safe, durable, and aesthetic result — a space where your child can play peacefully and freely.
